TOEICに出る接続詞・接続副詞まとめ【Part5/6必修】

接続詞・接続副詞がTOEICで重要な理由

TOEICのPart5では「接続詞 vs 前置詞」の使い分けが最頻出文法問題の一つです。また Part6の文挿入問題では、空欄に入る文を選ぶ際に接続副詞（however, therefore など）が強力なヒントになります。これらを正確に使い分けられることは、文法パートの得点を安定させるうえで不可欠です。

接続詞と接続副詞の最大の違いは文法的な役割です。接続詞（because, although など）は節（主語＋動詞）をつなぎますが、接続副詞（however, therefore など）は副詞なので節をつなぐ機能はなく、前の文の内容を受けて次の文を導きます。

接続詞：節と節をつなぐ

以下の接続詞はTOEICに頻出です。後ろに「S + V」が続くことを確認しましょう。

• because / since / as（理由）: The meeting was postponed because the manager was unavailable.
• although / even though / though（逆接）: Although the deadline is tight, the team will complete the project.
• while / whereas（対比・同時）: While the sales team exceeded its target, the marketing budget was reduced.
• unless（条件・否定）: Please confirm your attendance unless you have a scheduling conflict.
• once / as soon as（時間）: Once the contract is signed, production will begin immediately.
• so that / in order that（目的）: We updated the system so that employees can access it remotely.
• if / provided that / as long as（条件）: If you have any questions, please contact our support team.

前置詞：句（名詞）を導く

接続詞と混同されやすい前置詞です。後ろに「名詞（句）」が続きます。

• because of / due to / owing to（理由）: The flight was delayed due to bad weather.
• despite / in spite of（逆接）: Despite the tight schedule, the event was a success.
• during（時間）: Please turn off your phone during the presentation.
• before / after / since（時間・前置詞用法）: Submit the form before the end of the month.
• without（欠如）: The report was submitted without any errors.

「although vs despite」「because vs because of」はTOEIC Part5の定番問題です。後ろに節が来るか名詞句が来るかで判断します。

接続副詞：文と文をつなぐ副詞

接続副詞は文の冒頭に置かれ、前文との論理関係を示します。Part6の文脈問題や文挿入問題で特に重要です。

• however / nevertheless / nonetheless（逆接）: The budget was exceeded. However, the project delivered strong results.
• therefore / thus / consequently / as a result（結果）: Sales increased significantly. Therefore, we are expanding our team.
• in addition / furthermore / moreover（追加）: The new software is faster. In addition, it is easier to use.
• for example / for instance（例示）: Several benefits are available. For example, employees receive free training.
• in contrast / on the other hand（対比）: The first quarter was strong. In contrast, the second quarter saw a decline.
• meanwhile（同時）: The report was being drafted. Meanwhile, the team prepared the presentation.
• otherwise（さもなければ）: Please confirm your reservation. Otherwise, your booking may be cancelled.

Part6文挿入問題での活用法

Part6に新設された文挿入問題では、4つの選択肢から文脈に最も合う文を選びます。このとき、空欄の前後に接続副詞が含まれていれば、論理関係のヒントになります。

• 空欄の後に「however」→ 空欄には前の内容と逆の内容が入る
• 空欄の後に「therefore」→ 空欄には結論の根拠が入る
• 空欄の後に「in addition」→ 空欄には追加情報が入る
